He would then pronounce “Allāhu akbar” and go down into prostration, doing in this second prostration exactly what he had done in the first.
Next he raised his head, again saying the takbīr, and rose on the balls of his feet, supporting himself with his knees and thighs. Once fully upright he began the recitation and performed the second rakʿah in the same manner as the first.
After that he sat for the first tashahhud in the iftirāsh posture, the same sitting he adopted between the two prostrations. He placed his right hand on his right thigh and his left hand on his left thigh, touched the thumb of his right hand to his middle finger so that they formed a ring, pointed with his index finger and looked at it, saying:
“Al-taḥiyyātu lillāh wa-l-ṣalawāt wa-l-ṭayyibāt, al-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuhā al-nabiyy wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh, al-salāmu ʿalaynā wa ʿalā ʿibādillāhi al-ṣāliḥīn. Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhū wa rasūluh” (All greetings, all prayers and all good words belong to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger).
He kept this sitting brief.
He would then rise with the takbīr and perform the third and fourth rakʿahs, making them shorter than the first two and reciting only the Opening Chapter of the Book in each.
In the final tashahhud he assumed the tawarruk posture: he spread his left leg, laying its upper side on the ground, kept his right foot upright, drew both legs out to his right, and sat with his buttocks on the ground. He recited the same tashahhud as before and then added:
“Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad kamā ṣallayta ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka ḥamīdun majīd; wa bārik ʿalā Muḥammad wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad kamā bārakta ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka ḥamīdun majīd” (O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent prayers upon the family of Abraham. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Abraham. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious).
