The ninth pillar is tranquillity (ṭumaʾnīnah) in every one of the actions just mentioned—that is, a moment of stillness, however brief. The Qur’an and the Sunnah alike indicate that whoever does not maintain this tranquillity in his prayer is deemed not to have prayed and must be told to repeat the prayer.
The tenth and eleventh pillars are the final tashahhud and the sitting for it. In it one says, “All greetings…,” continuing to the words, “O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad.” It is authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ never omitted this, and he instructed, “Pray as you have seen me pray.” Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “We used to recite it before it was made obligatory for us,” and his phrase “before it was made obligatory” proves that it is compulsory.
The twelfth pillar is invoking blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ in the final tashahhud by saying, “O Allah, bless Muhammad.” Anything added beyond that is recommended (sunna).
The thirteenth pillar is performing the pillars in their proper sequence, for the Prophet ﷺ observed that order in his prayer and said, “Pray as you have seen me pray.” He likewise taught the man who prayed incorrectly step by step, repeatedly using the word “then,” thereby indicating the required order.
