The pivot of this entire affair rests on four elements:
A sound intention and an overriding strength(1), accompanied by longing and awe.
These four(2) are(3) the foundations of this matter(4). Any shortcoming that finds its way(5) into a servant’s faith, states, outward behavior, or inner reality arises from a deficiency in these four—or in some of them(6).
Therefore, let the discerning person contemplate these four(7) things, make them his path and mode of travel, and build upon them his knowledge, deeds, words, and spiritual states(8). No one has ever achieved success except through them, and no one has ever fallen behind except by losing them.
Allah knows best(9). Allah(10) is the One whose help is sought; on Him we rely, to Him we turn with desire, and He is the One we ask to grant us and all our brothers among Ahl al-Sunnah success in realizing them in knowledge

فصل ومِلاكُ هذا الشأن أربعة أمور: نية صحيحة، وقوةٌ غالبة (١)، يقارنهما: رغبة، ورهبة. فهذه (٢) الأربعة هي (٣) قواعد [هذا] (٤) الشأن. ومهما دخل على (٥) العبد من النقص (٦) في إيمانه وأحواله وظاهره وباطنه فهو من نقصان هذه الأربعة أو نقصان بعضها. فليتأمل اللبيب هذه الأربعة (٧) الأشياء، وليجعلْهَا سيره وسلوكه، ويبني عليها علومه وأعماله وأقواله وأحواله (٨)، فما نَتَجَ من نَتَجَ إلا منها، ولا تخلف من تخلف إلا من فقدها. [والله أعلم] (٩)، والله (١٠) المستعان، وعليه التكلان، وإليه الرغبة، وهو المسؤول بأن يوفقنا وسائر إخواننا من أهل السنة لتحقيقها علمًا
