Risālat Ibn al-Qayyim ilā IkhwānihIbn al-Qayyim

Moreover, Allah—glorified and exalted be He—has sworn by His own majestic Self that we do not truly believe until we appoint the Messenger as arbiter in every dispute among us, then yield to his judgment and submit in full surrender (1). The arbitration of anyone else and obedience to him will be of no benefit to us, will not save us from the punishment of Allah (2), and that (3) reply will not be accepted from us when, on the Day of Resurrection, we hear His call: “What answer did you give to the messengers?” (65) [al-Qasas: 65]. He will assuredly question us about this and demand a reply. Allah the Exalted says: “Then We shall surely question those to whom [the messengers] were sent, and We shall surely question the messengers” (6) [al-Aʿrāf: 6]. The Prophet ﷺ also said, “It has been revealed to me that you will be tried because of me and will be asked about me” (4), meaning—

(1) Allah the Exalted says: “But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge in their disputes, then find no discomfort within themselves concerning what you have decided, and submit in full submission.” (Quran 4:65) (2) Manuscript C reads “submission to someone else” in place of “appointing someone else as arbiter” through “Allah’s punishment.” (3) Manuscript C reads “here” in place of “this.” (4) Imam Ahmad narrated, with his chain of transmission, a lengthy hadith traced back to Aisha, which includes: “As for the trial of the grave, it is by me that you will be tested and concerning me that you will be questioned.” (Musnad, 7:201, hadith 24566). Al-Mundhiri said, “Ahmad narrated it with an authentic chain of transmission” (Al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib, 4:364-365), and al-Albani graded it sound (Sahih al-Jami al-Saghir wa Ziyadatuh, 1:289-290, hadith 1361). Al-Bukhari also narrated its meaning with his chain of transmission: ... The Prophet praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: “There is nothing that I had not been shown except that I saw it in this place of mine, even Paradise and Hell. It was revealed to me that you will be tested in your graves with a trial like—or nearly like; I do not know which of the two Asma said—the trial of the False Messiah. It will be said: ‘What do you know of this man?’ As for the believer—or the one who is certain; I do not know which of the two Asma said—he will say: ‘He is Muhammad; he is the Messenger of Allah. He brought us clear proofs and guidance, so we responded and followed. He is Muhammad,’ three times. It will then be said: ‘Sleep righteously. We have known that you were certain about him.’ But as for the hypocrite—or the doubter; I do not know which of the two Asma said—he will say: ‘I do not know. I heard =
