and to pray exactly as he (1) prayed (2); to turn away from whatever people have introduced into the prayer—whether additions, omissions, or postures that were never transmitted from the Messenger of Allah (3) nor from any of his Companions (4); and not to rely on (5) the views of those who grant concessions, who are content with the bare minimum they believe to be obligatory while other scholars (6) dispute with them on that point (7) and consider obligatory what the former have omitted—even though the sound hadiths and the prophetic Sunnah (8) may side with the latter, to which they pay no heed (9), saying, “We are adherents of the school of So-and-so.” (10) Such an argument will not avail one before Allah, nor will it excuse anyone who neglects what he knows of the Sunnah in his possession (11). For Allah, exalted is He, has commanded obedience to His Messenger and following him alone; He never commanded us to follow anyone else. Others are to be obeyed only when they enjoin what the Messenger enjoined, and every person besides the Messenger ﷺ [fa-maʾkhūdh] (12) has some of his statements accepted and some left aside (13).
