to him, “And what is the sweetest thing it contains?” (1) He answered, “Knowledge of God, love for Him, intimacy in His nearness, (2) and yearning to meet Him.” (3)
No delight in this world resembles the bliss of the inhabitants of Paradise except this. (4) For that reason the Prophet ﷺ said, “From your world two things have been made beloved to me: women and perfume, and the delight of my eye is in the prayer.” (5) He thus declared that two matters from this world had been endeared to him—women and perfume— (6) and then added, “and the delight of my eye is in the prayer.” (7)
(1) Manuscript C reads, “and what it is,” instead of, “and how delightful what it contains is.”
(2) Manuscript C reads, “through it,” instead of, “through nearness to Him.”
(3) The author cites it in Rawdat al-Muhibbin, p. 165, from “one of the gnostics,” and in Madarij al-Salikin, 1:454, from “one of those who love.” Abu Nuaym and Ibn al-Jawzi narrate it from Ibn al-Mubarak, omitting the words, “love of Him, intimacy through nearness to Him, and longing to meet Him.” Hilyat al-Awliya, 8:167; Sifat al-Safwah, 4:124.
(4) The word “the people” is omitted from manuscripts B and C.
(5) Narrated by Imam Ahmad, al-Musnad, 4:201, no. 13623; 3:581, nos. 1884 and 11885. Al-Nasai also narrates it in the Book of Companionship with Women, chapter “Love of Women,” 7:72, no. 3949. Al-Hakim narrates it in al-Mustadrak and says: “This hadith is sound according to Muslim’s criteria, though neither of the two included it.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him. Al-Mustadrak, 2:160. Al-Iraqi graded its chain of transmission as good; al-Mughni an Hamli al-Asfar fi Takhrij ma fi al-Ihya min al-Akhbar, in the margin of al-Ghazali’s Ihya Ulum al-Din, 2:30. Al-Albani said: “Its chain of transmission is fair (hasan).” Tahqiq Mishkat al-Masabih, 3:1448, no. 5261.
(6) “Women and perfume” is omitted from manuscript C.
(7) The passage from “thus he informed that it had been made beloved to him” to “prayer” is omitted from manuscript B.
