Risālat Ibn al-Qayyim ilā IkhwānihIbn al-Qayyim

the Jahmiyyah (1): “Praise be to Allah who, in every era when the Messengers are no longer present, appoints [remnants] (2) from among the people of knowledge. They summon the misguided to guidance and patiently endure the harm they receive. By Allah’s Book they give life to the spiritually dead, and by Allah’s light they [give sight] (3) to those who are blind. How many a victim of Iblis have they revived, and how many a [lost] (4) wanderer have they set upon the right way! How excellent is their impact on people, and how wretched is the people’s treatment of them! They purge Allah’s Book of the distortions of extremists, the fabrications of impostors, and the misinterpretations of the ignorant—those who have hoisted the banners of innovation and unleashed the reins of turmoil. They allege divergent understandings of the Scripture while opposing the Scripture, united in their abandonment of the Scripture. They speak about Allah, concerning Allah, and regarding the Book of Allah without knowledge. They traffic in ambiguous speech and beguile the common folk with the doubts they circulate. We seek refuge in Allah from the trials stirred up by those who lead others astray.” (5)

(1) The Jahmiyyah were followers of Jahm ibn Safwan al-Samarqandi, Abu Mihriz, a client of Banu Rasib of al-Azd. He was killed toward the end of the Umayyad dynasty. They were among the deviant sects that opposed Ahl al-Sunnah. Among their deviations was their claim that iman (faith) consists solely of conviction in the heart; that Allah's knowledge is originated and created; that He does not know a thing before creating it; and that Paradise and Hell, along with their inhabitants, will ultimately perish. Exalted is Allah above what they say. See Ibn Hazm, al-Fasl fi al-Milal wa-al-Ahwa wa-al-Nihal, 2:296-297, 266; 5:73; and al-Shahrastani, al-Milal wa-al-Nihal, 1:86-87.
