the religion (1)(2).”

Another opinion (3) is that basirah (4) means “a lesson,” as in the saying: “Do you not (5) have in such-and-such a case a basirah?”—that is, a lesson. The poet (6) said:

Among the earliest peoples who have passed away
there are (7) insights (8) for us.

The more exact view is that the lesson is the fruit (9) of basirah; once a person sees with insight, he takes heed (10). Whoever is devoid of heed is, in effect, without basirah.

The root meaning of the word is manifestation and clarity; hence the Quran is basāʾir—evidences and guidance.

by al-Suyuti, 1:105-106). (1) Lisan al-Arab, 4:65; Taj al-Arus, 10:209. Neither work attributes it to anyone. Taj al-Arus states: “Ibn al-A'rabi said: A man is said to have acquired insight when he leaves disbelief for the insight of faith...” (10:209). (2) Manuscript B reads “in this world” instead of “in religion”; the phrase is omitted in manuscript C. (3) Kitab al-Ayn by al-Khalil cites both the statement and its supporting poetic verse (7:118). (4) The word “insight” is omitted in manuscript C. (5) The original reads al-kaysu (intelligence); the adopted reading is from manuscript B. (6) The passage from “Is not” to “the poet” is omitted in manuscript C. (7) The word “for us” is omitted in manuscript C. (8) Al-Jahiz attributes it to Quss ibn Sa'ida among five verses (al-Bayan wa-al-Tabyin, 1:309). (9) Manuscripts B and C read “then” instead of “fruit.” (10) Manuscript C reads, “Then, when he reflects, he gains insight,” instead of, “Then, when he gains insight, he reflects.”
