And He—glorified be He—expressed the word “imāman” in the singular and did not say, “and make us leaders (aʾimmah) for the God-fearing” (1). It has therefore been suggested that imām in the verse (2) is the plural of ām (3), just as ṣāḥib is pluralized as ṣiḥāb. This view (4), attributed to al-Akhfash (5), is far-fetched, for the expression is not part of the well-known, commonly used (6) Arabic, and the speech of Allah should not be interpreted on the basis of such an uncommon usage (7).
Others (8) have said that imām here is a verbal noun rather than a substantive (9)(10): one may say amma imāman just as one says ṣāma ṣiyāman or qāma qiyāman, meaning, “make us people endowed with imāmah” (11),

(5) See Maʻani al-Quran by al-Akhfash, 3/423. Al-Akhfash was Said ibn Masadah al-Mujashi, a client of Banu Mujashi, known as Abu al-Hasan. He studied with al-Khalil and Sibawayh and was a non-extremist Qadari (a proponent of human free will). His works include al-Masail al-Kabir and al-Arud. He died in 215 AH, though the date is disputed. See Tabaqat al-Nahwiyyin by al-Zubaydi, pp. 74-76; Inbah al-Ruwat by al-Qifti, 2/36-42; and Bughyat al-Wuat by al-Suyuti, 1/590-591.
