His share of guidance will be in proportion to his own condition; and just as his guiding others (1), teaching them, and giving them advice (2) opens (3) the door of guidance for him—because recompense matches the deed—so, each time (4) he leads someone aright and instructs him, Allah guides him and teaches him in return (5), until (6) he becomes both a guide and one who is rightly guided. This meaning appears in the Prophet’s supplication, recorded by al-Tirmidhī and others (7): “O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith; make us guides who are themselves guided, neither astray nor leading others astray, peaceful toward Your allies, at war with Your enemies, loving by virtue of Your love…”
(1) Manuscript C reads: “the other” in place of “for others.”
(2) The phrase “and teaching and advising him” is omitted in manuscript C.
(3) Manuscript C reads: “you open” in place of “he opens.”
(4) Manuscripts B and C read: “and whenever” in place of “then whenever.”
(5) The phrase “Allah guided him and taught him” is omitted in manuscript B; the phrase “and taught him; Allah guided him and taught him” is omitted in manuscript C.
(6) Manuscript C reads: “became” in place of “then becomes.”
(7) Recorded by al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Book of Supplications, 5/450-451, chapter 30, hadith 3419, as part of a lengthy hadith beginning: “O Allah, I ask You for mercy from You by which You guide my heart ...” It was also recorded by Ibn Khuzaymah in his Sahih, 2/166, hadith 1119.
After citing the hadith, Ibn Hibban said, “This is false.” See al-Majruhin min al-Muhaddithin wa al-Duafa wa al-Matrukin, 1/231. Al-Albani said: “Its chain of transmission is weak.” See Daif Sunan al-Tirmidhi, p. 445, hadith 678.
However, the relevant wording of the hadith—“O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith and make us guiding guides, rightly guided”—was authenticated by some scholars through another hadith beginning: “O Allah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation, keep me alive so long as You know life to be better for me ...” It was recorded by Ahmad in al-Musnad, 5/327, hadith 17861, and by al-Nasai. It was authenticated by al-Albani, Sahih Sunan al-Nasai, 1/280-281, hadiths 1237-1238; by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, Sahih Ibn Hibban, arranged by Ibn Balban, 5/304-305, hadith 1971; and by al-Hakim, with al-Dhahabi concurring. See al-Mustadrak, 1/524-525.
