Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

Upon Him alone they seek aid and relief; to Him they direct every supplication and request. Whenever they leave for the mosque to perform the prayer, it is only to seek from Him bounty and approval, just as the Almighty has described them:

“You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking bounty from Allah and His good pleasure.” (48:29)

The same is true when they set out for any of the three sanctuaries—foremost the Sacred Mosque, to which they have been commanded to make pilgrimage. Allah says:

“O you who believe, do not violate the symbols of Allah, nor the sacred month, nor the sacrificial animals, nor the garlands, nor those who are heading for the Sacred House, seeking bounty from their Lord and His good pleasure.” (5:2)

Thus they journey to His House, seeking only their Lord’s bounty and pleasure. They crave none besides Him, hope in none besides Him, and fear none besides Him.

Yet Satan has made the evil of many people’s deeds seem fair to them and has tempted them away from devoting the religion purely to Allah toward various forms of polytheism. They now undertake travel and visitation in pursuit of favors from other than Allah, directing their longing toward such beings, and they saddle their mounts to head for the grave of a prophet or a Companion.

(1) Quran, Surah al-Fath 48:29. (2) The word “Uhud” is missing in MS A. (3) MSS A, Ṭ and D, as well as the printed edition, read: “He began with the Almighty’s words: Lā tuḥillū shaʿāʾir Allāh (‘Do not violate the sacred rites of Allah’).” (4) Quran, Surah al-Maʾidah 5:2. (5) MS Ṭ reads: ʿāmīn. (6) MS Ṭ has: minhu (“from him/it”). (7) MS Ṭ reads: shirkihim (“their idolatry”). (8) The printed edition has: li-rabbihim (“for their Lord”). (9) MSS A and Ṭ read: al-riḍā li-ghayr Allāh (“contentment with other than Allah”). MS B has: al-riḍā bi-ghayr Allāh, which the scribe then corrected in the margin to: al-rajāʾ li-ghayr Allāh (“placing one’s hope in other than Allah”). The printed edition reads: riḍā ghayr Allāh. (10) In the phrase ilayhi, the pronoun refers to “other than Allah”; hence the sense is “turning in longing to someone other than Allah.” The printed edition reads instead: “and turning in longing to other than Him.”
