And He—Exalted is He—said, describing the Christians:
“They have taken their scholars and monks as lords apart from Allah, and also the Messiah, son of Mary, though they were commanded to worship only one God. There is no god but He; transcendent is He above whatever they associate with Him.” (al-Tawbah 9:31)
For this reason Allah, Most High, said in His address to the Christians:
“Say, ‘O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you: that we worship none but Allah, that we associate nothing with Him, and that none of us take others as lords beside Allah. But if they turn away, then say, “Bear witness that we are Muslims.”’” (Āl ʿImrān 3:64)
He, Exalted is He, also said—affirming Islam and addressing the People of the Scripture:
“Say, ‘We believe in Allah, in what has been sent down to us, in what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we submit.’” (al-Baqarah 2:136)
—and His words continue until:
“Or do you say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes were Jews or Christians? Say, ‘Are you more knowledgeable, or is Allah?’ Who could be more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah? Allah is never heedless of what you do.” (al-Baqarah 2:140)
Since the foundation of the faith—namely, the religion of Islam—is one, even though the specific laws have varied, the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said in the authentic narration:
“We, the company of prophets, share one religion.”
