And the Most High said:
“O Prophet, Allah is sufficient for you—and for the believers who follow you.” (al-Anfāl 8:64) (1)
That is, Allah alone is sufficient for you and for those who follow you; He alone suffices all of you. (2) Whoever thinks the verse means, “Allah and the believers are sufficient for you,” has fallen into a serious error for many reasons explained elsewhere. (3)
Then He said:
“They said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us; soon Allah will grant us of His bounty, and so will His Messenger.’” (al-Tawbah 9:59) (4)
Here bounty is attributed to Allah, while the Messenger is mentioned with the act of granting, because nothing is lawful except what the Messenger has declared lawful. No one may take whatever comes to hand unless it is lawful in the Sharīʿah.
Then He said:
“Indeed, it is to Allah that we turn with hope.” (al-Tawbah 9:59) (5)
Thus all aspiration is directed to Allah alone, none besides Him—just as He said: (6)
“So when you have finished, devote yourself, and to your Lord direct your desire.” (al-Sharḥ 94:7–8) (7)
He therefore commanded that desire be directed to Him. Never has Allah commanded any creature to ask of another creature, even though He has permitted it in certain situations (8); nevertheless, He never enjoined it. Rather, the best course for a servant is never to ask anyone at all except Allah.
As is authentically reported concerning those who will enter Paradise without reckoning:
“They are those who do not seek ruqyah, do not cauterize themselves, do not take omens, and who rely upon their Lord.” (9)
Thus He made
