Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

As for the Prophet’s Mosque, the sound narrations establish that a single prayer performed there is better than a thousand prayers performed anywhere else, apart from the Sacred Mosque. This ruling is reported from the Prophet ﷺ through several independent chains.

In the two Ṣaḥīḥs, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“A prayer in this mosque of mine is better than a thousand prayers in any other mosque, except the Sacred Mosque; for I am the last of the prophets and this mosque of mine is the last of the mosques.”

Muslim also records, on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“A prayer in this mosque of mine is better than a thousand prayers elsewhere, except the Sacred Mosque.”

Muslim further transmits from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) the story of a woman who fell ill and vowed, “If Allah cures me, I will go out and pray in Jerusalem.” When she recovered and made preparations for the journey, Maymūnah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, came to her and told her, “Stay where you are, consume whatever you have prepared, and pray in the Messenger’s Mosque, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘A prayer in it is better than a thousand prayers elsewhere, except at the Mosque of the Kaʿbah.’”

And in the Musnad, it is related from Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said:

(1) This is the wording found in Sahih Muslim, Book of Hajj, chapter “The Excellence of Prayer in my two mosques, Mecca and Medina,” hadith no. 1394 (2/1012). Al-Bukhari also records it in the Book “The Excellence of Prayer in the Mosque of Mecca and the Mosque of Medina,” chapter 1, hadith no. 1190 (3/63 of Fath al-Bari). (2) The printed edition reads khayr (“better”); both forms—afdal (“more excellent”) and khayr—are reported in Muslim. (3) Sahih Muslim, Book of Hajj, chapter “The Excellence of Prayer in my two mosques, Mecca and Medina,” hadith no. 1395 (2/1013). (4) Manuscript B reads bishakwa (“with a complaint”); Muslim’s text has the wording cited above. (5) The printed edition reads bidhalik (“with that”); Muslim’s recension follows the wording given here. (6) Sahih Muslim, Book of Hajj, chapter “The Excellence of Prayer in my two mosques, Mecca and Medina,” hadith no. 1396 (2/1014).
