This is plainly affirmed by the sound ḥadīths. Still, it remains an area of dispute. As for the matters on which there is consensus, the four Imams and the other leading scholars unanimously agree that the two northern (Shāmī) corners are not to be kissed, nor is any part of the Kaʿbah’s sides, for the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—touched only the two Yemeni corners, and the great majority of the early generations followed this practice.
It has been related that Ibn ʿAbbās and Muʿāwiyah once circumambulated the House together. Muʿāwiyah touched all four corners, whereupon Ibn ʿAbbās said, “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, touched only the two Yemeni corners.” Muʿāwiyah replied, “Nothing of the House should be left untouched.” Ibn ʿAbbās responded, “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example to follow.” Muʿāwiyah then conformed to his view. Likewise, the scholars are unanimously agreed—based on the established Sunnah (2)—that it is not legislated to touch or kiss the Station of Abraham, which Allah Most High mentions in the Qur’an: “Take the Station of Abraham as a place of prayer” (Q 2:125). (3)
If, according to the mass-transmitted Sunnah and the consensus of the Imams, it is not prescribed to kiss the Station with one’s lips or to wipe it with one’s hand, then it is even more certain that none of the other stations associated with the prophets is to be kissed or wiped in that manner. (4)
