This is likewise the position of Abū Ḥanīfah’s disciples, as well as of the vast majority⁶ of the ḥadīth scholars, the Sufis, and a number of schools among the theologians and philosophers.
By this the objection raised by the Muʿtazilah—and by the Jahmiyyah⁷ and the like—can be decisively rebutted. For the proponents of affirmation, drawn from the ḥadīth scholars and from the bulk of the attribute-affirming theologians—namely the Kullābiyyah⁸, the Ashʿarīyyah⁹, the Karrāmiyyah¹⁰, and others—have argued that the Speech of Allah is uncreated, for
(1) The printed edition reads: “ashab ahl al-hadith” (followers of the hadith scholars).
(2) The Jahmiyyah are the followers of Jahm ibn Safwan. They are a negationist sect that denies God’s names and attributes, claims that human acts are predestined, holds that Paradise and Hell will come to an end, and reduces faith (iman) to inward knowledge alone, among other deviations. See: al-Shahrastani, al-Millal wa-l-nihal, marginalia to al-Fasl, 1:127–130.
(3) The Kullabiyyah are the followers of Abd Allah ibn Saʿid ibn Kullab al-Qattan. They affirm the divine names and attributes, yet by the methods of the scholastic theologians; hence Sunni scholars classify them among the affirming theologians (mutakallimat ahl al-ithbat). They agree with the Sunnis on many doctrinal questions and, in matters of predestination, divine names, and rulings, are closer to the Sunnis than the Ashʿaris. See: Majmuʿ al-fatawa, 3:103; 4:12, 14, 147, 156, 174.
(4) The Ashʿariyyah are the followers of Abu al-Hasan al-Ashʿari during the period before his return to the Sunni creed. In general they affirm only seven divine attributes and reinterpret the remainder by rational exegesis, despite the clear Quranic and hadith texts concerning attributes such as the divine face and hand, which God affirmed for Himself in a manner befitting His majesty. The Ashʿaris concur with the Sunnis on most fundamental doctrines, apart from the attributes and a few other issues that cannot be detailed here. Although Abu al-Hasan al-Ashʿari later embraced the Sunni position—as he states in al-Ibana—his earlier doctrine is still followed. See: al-Millal wa-l-nihal, marginalia to al-Fasl, 1:138–158.
(5) The Karramiyyah are the followers of Muhammad ibn Karram. They assert that God is a body (jism), that He is subject to accidents and has weight, and that He creates and provides without actual creation or provision, among other errors. They also hold the reprehensible view that faith consists merely in vocal confession even without heart-felt assent, thereby counting the hypocrite as a believer. See: Majmuʿ al-fatawa, 3:103; al-Baghdadi, al-Farqu bayna al-firaq, 202–214; al-Shahrastani, al-Millal wa-l-nihal, 2:11–22, marginalia to Ibn Hazm’s al-Fasl.
