Whoever turns a thoughtful ear to the words of God and the words of His Messenger—pondering them with both intellect and heart—will taste therein a depth of understanding, a sweetness, a blessing, and a benefit that cannot be found in any other discourse, whether poetry or prose.
Likewise, whoever makes a habit of the sanctioned supplications at their appropriate times—before dawn, after the obligatory prayers, during prostration, and the like—will find them sufficient and will feel no need for any innovated prayer, whether the innovation lies in its essence or in one of its qualities.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon the discerning person to exert himself in following the Sunnah in all such matters and to replace every practice he imagines to be good but is in fact an innovation with its proper counterpart from the Sunnah. For whoever seeks good will be granted it, and whoever guards himself against evil will be protected from it.
