Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

this conviction lodged in the hearts(1) is what sustains all of these practices; were it to fade, they would all disappear. Hence, if the very aim of visiting the graves for supplication(2) drags along such evils, the act is forbidden—indeed, even more emphatically so than praying at the graves themselves. It becomes a trial for the people, opens the gate to polytheism, and shuts the gate to genuine faith.

(1) In MS B the word is erased. (2) MSS J and D add the phrase “indaha” (there).
