Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

The Almighty has also said about the Christians:

“O People of the Scripture, do not go to extremes in your religion, and do not say of Allah anything but the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah and His word which He cast to Mary …” (Qur’an, 4:171).

He likewise says:

“Those who say, ‘Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary,’ have certainly disbelieved.” (Qur’an, 5:17),

and there are many other passages to the same effect.

Exaggeration regarding the prophets and the righteous has also occurred among certain misguided ascetics and Sufis, to the point that many of them have embraced the doctrines of indwelling (ḥulūl) and union (ittiḥād)—teachings that are uglier than, comparable to, or slightly less than the claim made by the Christians.

The Exalted further says:

“They have taken their rabbis and monks as lords apart from Allah, and also the Messiah, son of Mary.” (Qur’an, 9:31).

The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—explained this verse to ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, may Allah be pleased with him, saying: “They declared the unlawful to be lawful and the people obeyed them; and they declared the lawful to be unlawful and the people followed them.”

(1) Qur’an, 4:171 (partial). (2) MSS C and D add the divine words: laqad kafara alladhina qalu inna-llaha thalithu thalathah (Indeed, those who say, “Allah is the third of three” have fallen into disbelief)  Qur’an, 5:73. (3) Qur’an, 5:17 and 5:72 (partial). (4) Sufi writers continue to attribute to their shaykhs and revered figures qualities that belong solely to Allah, associating those they call the aghwath with directing the unseen realm, managing the universe and possessing knowledge of the hidden—claims likewise made for the abdal, aqtab and awtad. Their books abound in such descriptions; exalted is Allah far above what they allege. See, for example, Jami‛ Karamat al-Awliya’, 1:69–79, and the author’s Majmu‛ al-Fatawa, 11:433–445. (5) MS D vocalises kathir in the nominative. (6) Qur’an, 9:31 (partial). (7) This wording occurs in a hadith recorded by al-Tirmidhi in the Book of Qur’an Exegesis, under the commentary on Surat al-Tawbah, no. 3095 (5/278); al-Tirmidhi classified it as gharib. See also Tafsir Ibn Jarir al-Tabari, 10:80–81.
