to plant in this religion seedlings, employing them in His obedience,” (1) (2).
From this truthful report we know (3) that within his community there will be people who hold fast to his guidance—which is pure Islam—and people who deviate (4) toward some branch (5) of the ways of the Jews, or toward some branch of the ways of the Christians (6). Yet a person does not become an unbeliever by every (7) deviation; indeed, he may not even be deemed flagrantly sinful. A deviation may at times amount to unbelief, at times to grave immorality, at times to ordinary disobedience (8), and at times it may simply be an error.
(1) In MS (At) the phrase reads: “in obedience to Allah.”
(2) This wording occurs in a hadith transmitted by Ibn Majah in the Introduction, chapter “Following the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah,” hadith no. 8 (1:5). It is narrated from Abu ʿAnabah al-Khawlani (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘Allah will keep planting in this religion people whom He employs in His obedience.’” A similar report is found in the Musnad of Ahmad (4:200), also from Abu ʿAnabah al-Khawlani. I have not located any explicit ruling on the hadith by the major critics, yet none of its transmitters is so weak that his narration must be abandoned.
(3) The printed edition instead reads: “that there must always be among his community people who cling to his guidance…,” etc.
(4) The printed edition reads: “deviant.”
(5) The printed edition reads: “from the sects of the religion of the Jews.”
(6) The printed edition reads: “from the sects of the religion of the Christians.”
(7) The printed edition reads: “this deviation is not an act of unbelief.”
(8) The printed edition reads: “a wicked deed.”
