Among those supporting chains is the report recorded by Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī in his Musnad. Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Zayd ibn Ḥubbāb narrated to us; Jaʿfar ibn Ibrāhīm—one of the descendants of Dhul-Janāḥayn—narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar narrated from his father, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn.
He saw a man approach a gap near the Prophet’s grave—peace and blessings be upon him—enter it, and supplicate there. ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn forbade him and said,
“Shall I not relate to you a ḥadīth I heard from my father, from my grandfather, from the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—who said:
‘Do not take my grave as a festival, and do not turn your homes into graves. Your salutations reach me wherever you may be.’”
This narration was also transmitted by the ḥāfiẓ Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Maqdisī in his selection of excellent ḥadīths supplementary to the two Ṣaḥīḥs; the criteria he employed there are more rigorous than those of al-Ḥākim in his al-Ṣaḥīḥ.
Saʿīd likewise records in his Sunan: Ḥabbān ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān narrated to me, from Abū Saʿīd, the client of al-Mahri, who said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
(1) The printed edition reads: “anbaʾana” (he informed us).
(2) In MS Ad the wording is: “from my grandfather.”
(3) In MSS D and B: “from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace.”
(4) The hadith and its sources have already been cited; see the Hadith Index.
(5) The narrator is Hibban ibn ʿAli al-ʿAnazi al-Kufi, judged weak, though he possessed legal knowledge and merit. He belongs to the eighth generation; Ibn Majah transmitted his reports. He died in 172 AH at the age of sixty. See Ibn Hajar, Taqrib al-Tahdhib, 1:147, no. 98.
(6) The narrator is Muhammad ibn ʿAjlan al-Madani al-Qurashi, a freedman of Fatima bint al-Walid ibn ʿUtba and one of the practicing scholars. Ahmad, Ibn Maʿin, al-Nasaʾi, and others declared him reliable, although his narrations from Abu Hurayra became confused. He died in 148 AH. See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, 9:341–42, no. 564; and Taqrib al-Tahdhib, 2:190, no. 524.
(7) MS D has “freedman of al-Mahdi,” which is incorrect; the preferred reading is as printed. Abu Saʿid, the freedman of al-Mahri, is graded maqbul (acceptable) and belongs to the third generation. Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Nasaʾi, and al-Tirmidhi all transmit his reports. See Taqrib al-Tahdhib, 2:429, no. 42.
