“…those?” (1)
Thus he foretold that in his nation there would be people who parallel the Jews and the Christians—the People of the Scripture—and others who parallel the Persians and the Byzantines, the non-Arabs. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to forbid imitating either of these groups. Nor is this a report concerning the entire Ummah, for it has been repeatedly and soundly transmitted from him (2) that he said, “A contingent of my community (3) will remain manifest upon the truth until the Hour is established.” (4)
He also declared, peace be upon him, “Allah will not unite this Ummah upon misguidance, (5) and Allah will continue…"
(1) Sahih al-Bukhari, “Book of Holding Fast to the Sunnah,” chapter “The Prophet said: ‘You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you,’” hadith no. 7319 (Fath al-Bari, 13:300).
(2) MSS B and A read: la yazal (“he continues”).
(3) The printed edition instead reads: “Indeed it has reached the level of recurrent‐mass transmission that he said: ‘There will always remain a group of my community …,’” etc.
(4) This wording occurs in sound and widely transmitted hadiths recorded by al-Bukhari, Muslim, Ibn Majah, al-Hakim in the Mustadrak, Ahmad in the Musnad, al-Tirmidhi, and many others. Limiting ourselves to the two Sahihs: al-Bukhari cites it in “Book of the Merits of the Companions,” chapter 27, hadith no. 3640 (Fath al-Bari, 6:632), and also nos. 7311 and 7459, all on the authority of al-Mughira ibn Shuʿbah; he also reports it from Muʿawiya with a variant wording, hadith no. 3641. Muslim records it in the “Book of Leadership,” chapter “There will always remain a group of my community manifest …,” hadith nos. 1920 (from Thawban), 1921 (from al-Mughira), and 1037 (from Muʿawiya).
(5) A related report is narrated by al-Tirmidhi from Ibn ʿUmar: “Allah will not gather my community—or, he said: the community of Muhammad—upon misguidance; Allah’s hand is with the jamaʿah, and whoever breaks away will break away into the Fire.” Al-Tirmidhi, “Book of Trials,” chapter “On Holding Fast to the Collective,” hadith no. 2167 (4:466), who remarks: “This hadith is gharib through this chain.” Supporting narrations appear in al-Hakim’s Mustadrak (1:115–16) and in al-Sunnah by Ibn Abi ʿAsim, hadith nos. 80, 82–85 (pp. 39, 41–42). Al-Suyuti cites it in al-Jamiʿ al-saghir, adding, “Allah’s hand is over the collective, and whoever breaks away will break away into the Fire,” and grades it hasan (1:278, no. 1818). Al-Albani authenticates it in Sahih al-Jamiʿ al-saghir wa-zaydatuhu, no. 1844. Further corroboration appears in the Musnad (5:145) from Abu Dharr—“for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will not gather my community except upon guidance”—and in Sunan al-Darimi (1:29), Introduction, chapter “The Bounty Allah Granted the Prophet,” which includes the phrase “and He will not gather them upon misguidance.”
