Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

Indeed, some of the early generations transmitted reports praising the first ten days of Rajab, while other reports say otherwise. Nevertheless, turning the month into a special season by singling it out for fasting is regarded as disliked by Imām Aḥmad and others, following what has been related from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, Abū Bakrah, and other Companions—may Allah be pleased with them all.

Ibn Mājah also narrates that “the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—forbade fasting in Rajab.” He records it through Ibrāhīm ibn Mundhir al-Ḥizāmī, from Dāwūd ibn ʿAṭāʾ, who said, “Zayd ibn … related it to me.”

(1) The phrase “and it is narrated” is absent from manuscript B. (2) The words “ibn al-Khattab” are omitted in manuscript B. For reports from ‘Umar on this issue, see Ibn Hajar, Tabyin al-‘Ajab, p. 35. (3) The printed edition adds “and Abu Bakr,” which is also correct, for it is related that Abu Bakr forbade his household from that practice (Majmu‘ al-Fatawa 25:291). The same ruling is attributed to Abu Bakrah; see Tabyin al-‘Ajab, p. 35. Abu Bakrah is the Companion Nufay‘ b. al-Harith—some say b. Masruh—al-Thaqafi, a client of the Messenger of Allah and a notable Companion who settled in Basra; see al-Isaba 3:572, no. 8793. (4) From this point up to the phrase “and is the exclusive observance disliked?” (about three lines below) is missing in manuscript A. (5) Manuscript B misreads the name as “al-jazami”; the correct reading is Ibrahim b. al-Mundhir b. ‘Abd Allah b. al-Mundhir b. al-Mughira al-Asadi al-Hizami. Ibn Hajar writes in Taqrib al-Tahdhib that he is “reliable, though Ahmad criticized him over the Qur’an.” He belongs to the tenth generation, died in 236 AH, and is cited by Bukhari, Tirmidhi, and others (Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:43-44, no. 283). (6) The preposition “from” (ʿan) is missing in manuscript T, while manuscript B reads: “narrated to us Dawud b. ‘Ata.” (7) Dawud b. ‘Ata al-Muzani, Abu Sulayman al-Madani, is a weak transmitter; of the Six canonical collections, only Ibn Majah records his hadith. He is of the eighth generation (Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:233, no. 28).
