Rather, true love for him and proper veneration of him are perfected only by following him, obeying him, carrying out his commands, reviving his Sunnah both inwardly and outwardly, spreading the message with which he was sent, and striving for that cause with heart, hand, and tongue. This (1) was the way of the foremost forerunners among the Emigrants and the Helpers, and of those who followed them with excellence.

Most of the people you will find so eager (2) for such innovations—despite their good intentions and the effort (3) for which they may hope to be rewarded—are sluggish (4) in fulfilling the Messenger’s directives, in precisely those matters for which they have been ordered to exert themselves. They resemble someone who gilds the Qur’an yet never recites it, or recites it but does not act upon it; someone who beautifies the mosque yet does not pray in it, or prays there only rarely; someone who amasses ornate prayer-beads (5) and decorative prayer-rugs and similar outward adornments that have no legal basis, accompanied as they are by ostentation, pride, and distraction from what is prescribed—things that corrupt the state of their owner.

As the hadith states: “No nation’s deeds ever deteriorated except that they began to adorn their mosques.” (6)

Know, then, that among deeds are those that contain good—because they include aspects that are legislated—yet also contain evil, whether innovation or something else; thus that deed

(1) MS. B reads: hādhā (this). (2) The printed edition reads: ḥirṣāʾ (eager/covetous). (3) MS. T likewise has alladhīna; the intended form is probably alladhayn (dual). The other manuscripts read alladhī. (4) MS. B has ʿan, whereas MS. T has min. (5) Al-masābīḥ (pl. of misbaḥah or subḥah) are strings of beads used for counting tasbīḥ (glorifications). See Mukhtār al-Ṣiḥāḥ, root S-B-H, p. 282. Users claim they help them keep an accurate tally of dhikr, but Sufi circles invest them with sanctity, blessing, and unsound beliefs; some will scarcely invoke God without them. Such prayer beads are an innovation (bidʿah) with no basis in the religion, especially when one attributes special merit to them. (6) Hadith recorded by Ibn Mājah, Book of Mosques, chapter “Ornamenting Mosques,” no. 741 (1/244–45). Al-Suyūṭī graded it ḥasan (sound) in al-Jāmiʿ al-ṣaghīr, 2/497, no. 7918.
