it was an innovation; and the one who introduced it excused himself by saying that people had begun to disperse before hearing the sermon, whereas in the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, they would not leave until they had listened—or at least most of them would.
He is told: The real cause is your own negligence. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to deliver a sermon whose purpose was to benefit the people, convey the message to them, and guide them, whereas your aim is to affirm your own authority. Even if you claim to seek their religious rectitude, you are not teaching them what will benefit them (1). Your committing one sin does not entitle you to introduce another; rather, the proper course (2) is for you to repent to Allah and follow the Sunnah of His Prophet. Once you do that, matters will set themselves aright, and if they do not, Allah will call you to account only for your own deeds, not for theirs.
Whoever understands these two principles will see many of the specious arguments for newly-invented practices dissolve. It has been related from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said:
“No people ever introduce an innovation without Allah’s removing from them a Sunnah of equal measure.” (3)
I have already pointed to this: the revealed laws are nourishment for the hearts. When hearts feed on innovations, they have no capacity left for the Sunnah (4); they are like a man who nourishes himself on tainted food.
Most rulers introduced various forms of unjust policy—confiscating wealth that may not be taken and imposing punishments that are not permitted—because they neglected the prescribed duty of enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong. Had they limited themselves to taking only what is lawful to take and spending it only where it is lawful to spend, seeking thereby to establish the religion of Allah rather than to bolster their own authority; had they applied the prescribed penalties to both the noble and the lowly, the near and the distant alike, and been scrupulous in using encouragement and deterrence to uphold the justice Allah has ordained—they would not have needed to
