The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not fast on Saturday except for what has been made obligatory upon you.”¹
Abū ʿAbd Allāh [Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal] remarked, “Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd used to avoid this ḥadīth,² and he refused³ to narrate it to me, though he had heard it from Thawr. Later, I heard it from Abū ʿĀṣim.”⁴
Al-Athram said, “Abū ʿAbd Allāh’s basis for allowing voluntary fasting on Saturday is that all the other reports contradict the tradition of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Busr. Among them is the ḥadīth of Umm Salamah: when she was asked, ‘On which days did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fast most frequently?’ she replied, ‘Saturday and Sunday.’⁵
Another is the ḥadīth of Juwayriyyah,⁶ in which the Prophet ﷺ said to her on a Friday, ‘Are you fasting…’”
(1) This is the same hadith mentioned previously.
(2) The words wa-kana (“and he was”) are missing in manuscript (T).
(3) The printed edition reads yanfīhi (“he denies it”).
(4) In manuscript (AT) it reads abā (“he refused”) without the prefixed conjunctive wāw.
(5) See: al-Mughni and al-Sharh al-Kabir, 3/99. The narrator in question is al-Dahhak ibn Mukhallad ibn al-Dahhak ibn Muslim al-Shaybani, Abu Asim al-Nabil of Basra—reliable and firmly grounded. He died in 212 AH, and all six canonical collections transmit his reports. See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1/373, no. T16.
(6) The same wording occurs in a hadith recorded by al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan al-Kubra 4/303; by Ibn Khuzayma in his Sahih 3/318, no. 2167 (al-Albani comments: “its isnad is hasan, and Ibn Hibban declared it sahih”); by Ahmad in the Musnad 6/324; and by al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak 1/436, who deemed its chain sahih. Ibn Hajar also cites it in Fath al-Bari 4/235.
(7) Juwayriya bint al-Harith ibn Abi Dhirar ibn Habib al-Khuzaʿiyya, Mother of the Believers—originally named Barra—was renamed Juwayriya by the Prophet. Captured at the battle of al-Muraysiʿ, she fell to the lot of Thabit ibn Qays and negotiated a mukataba (contractual manumission); the Prophet paid her price, married her, and as a result the Companions freed the captives from her tribe. Renowned for her piety, learning, and eloquence, she died in Medina in 56 AH at the age of sixty-five. See: Usd al-Ghaba 5/419–421; al-Aʿlam 2/148.
