Section on Fasting during the Festival Days of the Unbelievers
As for fasting on the festival days of the unbelievers when one singles them out for fasting—such as the fast of Nawrūz and Mihragān, two days highly esteemed by the Persians—the jurists have differed. The dispute revolves around whether contrariness to them is achieved by fasting itself, or rather by refraining from designating the day for any special action at all.
We shall begin with the fast of Saturday. Thawr ibn Yazīd narrated from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Busr al-Sulamī, from his sister al-Ṣammāʾ, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not fast on Saturday except for what has been obligated upon you; and if one of you finds nothing else, let him chew even the bark …”

(3) He is ʿAbd Allah ibn Busr ibn Abi Busr al-Mazani al-Sulami. Both he and his father were Companions. He died in Syria in 88 AH at the age of ninety-four—some say one hundred—and was the last Companion to die there. فصل فأما صوم أيام أعياد الكفار مفردة بالصوم، كصوم يوم النيروز والمهرجان، وهما يومان يعظمهما الفرس، فقد اختلف فيها؛ لأجل أن المخالفة
