for their rites and ceremonies; any Muslim who buys it is acting wrongly.
Ibn al-Qāsim also said: If a bishop sells part of church land to finance its repair—and that land may have been set aside as an endowment for the church’s benefit—it is impermissible for Muslims to purchase it for two reasons:
- It would amount to helping exalt the church.
- It involves selling endowed property, and in matters of endowment they are bound by the same restrictions that bind Muslims. I therefore hold that a Muslim judge should not intervene—neither by forbidding the sale, nor by ratifying it, nor in any other way.
He further stated: Ibn al-Qāsim was asked about boarding ships on which Christians travel to their festivals. He regarded this as reprehensible, fearing that divine wrath might descend upon them for the idolatry on which they have gathered. Ibn al-Qāsim likewise disapproved of a Muslim sending Christians a gift on their festival in reciprocation for previous favors, deeming such an act to be a form of venerating their festival.
