Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

—namely, their ritual slaughter. This is the position we adopt, and it parallels the divine statement, “and that over which any name other than Allah has been invoked” (Q 2:173). These are the very animals they used to sacrifice to the idols they worshipped.

He added: A number of scholars made light of the matter and would say, “Allah has made their meat lawful for us,” yet Allah knows full well what they are saying and what they really intend by it. Ibn Wahb transmitted this view from Ibn ʿAbbās, ʿUbāda ibn al-Ṣāmit, Abū al-Dardāʾ, Sulaymān ibn Yasār, ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, Ibn Shihāb, Rabīʿa, and Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd.

(1) Quran, Surat al-Baqara 2:173 (part of the verse). (2) The word dhabaʾihihim (their slaughtered animals) is missing in manuscript A. (3) Thus in manuscript A and the printed edition; the other manuscripts read yastakhfuna dhalika (they conceal that). (4) His biography has already been given; see the Index of Persons. (5) The Companion in question is ʿUwaymir b. Malik b. Zayd b. Qays al-Khazraji al-Ansari. The Prophet paired him with Salman al-Farisi; he fought in all engagements after Uhud; ʿUthman b. ʿAffan appointed him judge of Damascus, where he died in 32 AH. See Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat 7:391–93; Ibn Hajar, al-Isaba 5:185–86. (6) Manuscript B reads “b. Bashar,” but “ibn Yasar” is probably correct, as in the other copies; see above for the biography of Sulayman b. Yasar. (7) This is al-Zuhri; for his biography consult the Index of Persons. (8) The printed edition has “Rabiʿa b. ʿAbd al-Rahman,” which conflicts with all the manuscripts; the correct form is Rabiʿa b. Abi ʿAbd al-Rahman—that is, Rabiʿa b. Furukh (Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman), the mawla of the Taym clan, known as Rabiʿa al-Raʾy. Ibn Hajar (Taqrib, no. 60) calls him “a reliable, eminent jurist” of the fifth generation. All six canonical collections transmit his hadith. He died in 136 AH. (9) The name probably refers to Yahya b. Saʿid al-Qattan, the leading authority in hadith criticism and evaluation, a meticulously reliable memorizer and exemplar among the scholars of the ninth generation; he died in 198 AH at the age of seventy-eight (Taqrib, no. 72). Alternatively, it could be Yahya b. Saʿid b. Qays al-Ansari al-Madani, Abu Saʿid, renowned judge and hadith scholar of Madinah who governed al-Hira and died in 144 AH; the latter seems more likely here, given his contemporaneity with Rabiʿa, Ibn Shihab, and ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAziz (Tahdhib 11:221–24, no. 360).
