Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

It is likewise reported: “Men met their ruin the moment they obeyed women.”

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also said to the Mothers of the Believers, when they contested his preference for Abū Bakr, “You are the women who acted like the companions of Joseph.” By this he indicated that it is in women’s nature to dispute with a man of sound judgment—just as he stated in another ḥadīth: “I have never seen anyone, deficient in reason and religion, who can so completely overpower a man of intelligence as one of you can.”

Moreover, when the poet al-Aʿshā of Bāhila recited before him the verses that include the line:

“…and they are the worst conqueror of whoever is overcome,”

the Prophet did not object to its sentiment.

(1) Ahmad reports it from Abu Bakrah with the wording: “Men are destroyed when they obey women; men are destroyed when they obey women”—repeated three times (al-Musnad, 5/45). Al-Suyuti includes it in al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir, 2/712, no. 9596, grading it hasan (fair). Ahmad’s chain is sound, but al-Albani judged the hadith weak; see Daʿif al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir wa Ziyadatuh, p. 879, no. 6097. (2) The printed edition reads: “to one of the Mothers of the Believers when she answered him back.” (3) The point is attested in a hadith recorded by al-Bukhari, Sahih, Book of the Prophets, chap. 19, nos. 3384–3385 (Fath al-Bari, 6/417–418). (4) Reported by both Bukhari and Muslim. Muslim: Sahih, Book of Faith, chapter “Clarification of the Deficiency of Faith,” no. 79 (1/87), with the wording, “You are most overpowering for a man of intelligence among you.” Bukhari: Sahih, Book of Menstruation, chapter “The Menstruating Woman’s Exemption from Fasting,” no. 304 (Fath al-Bari, 1/405), wording: “I have never seen anyone with a deficiency in reason and religion more capable of carrying off the mind of a resolute man than one of you.” (5) Most sources call him ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Aʿwar al-Mazani. Ibn Hajar, however, states in al-Isaba that he was al-Haramazi and that no poet nicknamed al-Aʿsha is known among the Banu Mazin. All agree that his name was ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Aʿwar and that he was a Companion. The present text’s designation “al-Aʿsha of Bahila” is puzzling, for al-Aʿsha of Bahila was ʿAmir ibn al-Harith ibn Riyah al-Bahili, and I found no source attributing these verses to him. See: al-Isaba, 2/276 (no. 4535); Usd al-Ghaba, 1/102; al-Lubab, 3/45; Musnad Ahmad, 2/204; Ibn Saʿd, Tabaqat, 7/53; al-Aʿlam, 3/250.
