Fourth Aspect
Festivals and sacred seasons, taken as a whole, bring immense benefit to people in both their religious and worldly lives—just as prayer, almsgiving, and pilgrimage do. For that reason every revealed law has legislated them, as the Almighty says:
“For every community We have appointed a rite, that they might pronounce the name of God over the livestock He has provided for them.” (Al-Ḥajj 22:34)
and:
“For every community We have appointed rites which they are to observe.” (Al-Ḥajj 22:67)
Moreover, through the tongue of the Seal of the Prophets, God has prescribed works that secure human welfare in the most perfect manner. This is the perfection alluded to in His words:
“Today I have perfected your religion for you and completed My favor upon you.” (Al-Māʾidah 5:3)
The verse was revealed on the greatest festival of the upright community, for no festival in its category surpasses the one that combines both a consecrated place and a sacred time—namely the Festival of Sacrifice (ʿĪd al-Naḥr). Nor is there any individual day within that festival greater than the day the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, established for all Muslims, a day on which God banished disbelief and its people.
The religious prescriptions are the nourishment and sustenance of hearts, as ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd—may God be pleased with him—said (and it is also transmitted as a Prophetic report): “Every host loves that his banquet be attended, and the banquet of God is the Qur’an.”
Just as a hungry body, once it has taken the food it needs, has no appetite for any other food
