Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

He said:

“Jesus, son of Mary, said, ‘O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table spread from heaven to be a festival for the first of us and the last of us, and a sign from You; provide for us, for You are the best of providers.’” (al-Māʾidah 5:114)

Accordingly, Thursday is the Feast of the Table, whereas Sunday they call the Paschal Feast—also known as the Feast of Light and the Great Feast. Because it is a festival, they prepare for their children dyed eggs and the like, for on that day they eat whatever comes from animals—meat, milk, and eggs—whereas their fast is an abstention from animals and anything produced by them. (1) The verb qala (“he said”) is absent from MS A. (2) MSS A and Ṭ, as well as the printed edition, read: “he did not complete the verse.” (3) Quran, Surah al-Maʾidah (5:114). (4) MS B has al-fadḥ, a scribal error. The correct form is al-fisḥ, Easter—the feast commemorating Christ’s resurrection, according to what Muslims deem the Christians’ false belief. See: al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ 2:697; Lisān al-ʿArab, s.v. “faṣḥ.” (5) The printed edition reads: “they make it on that day for themselves and their children.” (6) The word fīhi (“in it”) is missing from MS A. (7) The printed edition adds: “of bread and raisins.” (8) MS A adds: “and shayrij”; shayrij is sesame oil (al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ 1:505). (9) The printed edition reads: “because it was singled out.” (10) The printed edition reads: “a special distinction.”
