Ghundar and ʿAbd al-Wahhāb also transmitted it from ʿAwf, from Abū al-Mughīrah, from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr, as his own statement.
And through the chain that reaches Abū Usāmah—from Ḥammād ibn Zayd, from Hishām, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn—it is related that he said:
“ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—was once brought a Nawrūz gift. He asked, ‘What is this?’ They replied, ‘O Commander of the Believers, today is Nawrūz.’ He responded, ‘Then make every day a Nawrūz!’”
Abū Usāmah commented: “He, may Allah be pleased with him, disliked even to utter the word ‘Nawrūz.’”
Al-Bayhaqī remarked: “This shows that it is disliked to single out a day with an observance the Sacred Law has not designated for it.”
(1) Muhammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Madani al-Basri. Ibn Hajar (Taqrib al-tahdhib) judges him “trustworthy; his written transmission is sound, though he is somewhat heedless.” He belongs to the ninth generation of narrators; all Six Books transmit from him. He died in 194 AH. See Taqrib al-tahdhib 2:151, no. 108.
(2) ʿAbd al-Wahhab ibn ʿAbd al-Majid ibn al-Salt ibn ʿUbayd Allah ibn al-Hakam ibn Abi al-ʿAs al-Thaqafi, Abu Muhammad al-Basri. Rated trustworthy; the Six Books all cite his hadiths. His memory declined three years before his death. He was born in 108 AH and died in 194 AH. See Tahdhib al-tahdhib 6:449–50, no. 934.
(3) The printed edition reads: “ʿAwf ibn Abi al-Mughira,” which is a corruption caused by mistaking the preposition ʿan (from) for ibn (son of).
(4) Al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-kubra, 9:234.
(5) Hammad ibn Zayd ibn Dirham al-Azdi al-Jahdami; his biography has already been provided. See the Index of Names.
(6) Hisham ibn Hassan; his biography has already been provided. See the Index of Names.
(7) The printed edition has “Hisham ibn Muhammad ibn Sirin,” another corruption produced by reading ʿan as ibn.
(8) The printed text reads: “the likes of Nayruz.”
(9) Al-Sunan al-kubra (9:235) records the wording as “Fayruz” with an initial faʾ. This seems preferable, because the narrator avoided saying “Nayruz,” as Abu Usama himself explained, and therefore substituted “Fayruz.”
(10) Al-Sunan al-kubra, 9:235.
