Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

Saʿīd ibn Salamah heard from Abān, who heard ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—say:

“Avoid the enemies of Allah on their festival days.”

He likewise transmitted through a sound chain from Abū Usāmah—ʿAwf related to us, from Abū al-Mughīrah, from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr—who said:

“Whoever settles in the lands of the non-Arabs, celebrates their Nawrūz and Mahrajan, and keeps imitating them until he dies in that state will be raised with them on the Day of Resurrection.”

He added, “This is also how Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd and Ibn Abī ʿAdī narrated it.”

(1) Manuscript B reads simply: “Saʿid ibn Salama,” whereas manuscript A has: “He heard Saʿid, his father ibn Salama, who heard his father, who heard ʿUmar …,” a wording that is probably the result of a copyist’s confusion. (2) Saʿid ibn Salama ibn Abi al-Hisam, the client of the family of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab, al-Madani, Abu ʿAmr al-Sadusi. Ibn Hajar (Taqrib al-tahdhib) describes him as “truthful; his written transmission is sound, but he errs when narrating from memory.” He belongs to the seventh generation of narrators, and Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Nasaʾi, and al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-mufrad all transmit from him. See: Taqrib al-tahdhib 1:297, no. 184; Tahdhib al-tahdhib 4:41–42, no. 66. (3) Al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-kubra, 9:234; al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Kanz al-ʿummal, 1:405, no. 1732. (4) Manuscript A adds here: “Keep away from the enemies of Allah on their festivals,” and the phrase is repeated. I consider this duplication a scribal error. The wording is also reported with a sound chain from Abu Usama. Abu Usama is Hammad ibn Usama ibn Zayd al-Qurashi, their client, al-Kufi, a precise and trustworthy hadith scholar of the ninth generation; he died in 201 AH at the age of eighty. See: Taqrib al-tahdhib 1:195, no. 529; Tahdhib al-tahdhib 3:2–3, no. 1. (5) Manuscript A reads: “al-ʿajam (the non-Arabs).” (6) Al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-kubra, 9:234. (7) Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Abi ʿAdi—sometimes identified by his grandfather’s name—Abu ʿAmr al-Basri. Ibn Hajar judges him “trustworthy, ninth generation.” He died in 194 AH, and all Six Books transmit his hadiths. See: Taqrib al-tahdhib 2:141, no. 11.
