Al-Walīd—or, according to another wording, Abū al-Walīd—transmitted from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr that he said: “Whoever takes up residence in the lands of the non-Arabs, celebrates their Nawrūz and Mahrajan, and continues to imitate them until he dies in that state will be resurrected with them on the Day of Judgment.”
He likewise narrated—through his chain—from al-Bukhārī, the author of the Ṣaḥīḥ, who said: Ibn Abī Maryam related to me; Nāfiʿ ibn Yazīd informed us; he heard from Salmān ibn Abī Zaynab and ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith
(1) Al-Walid ibn Abda, the client (mawla) of ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs. Abu Hatim judged him “unknown,” whereas Ibn Hibban lists him among the reliable transmitters. Because the sources differ greatly over his name, al-Bayhaqi expresses some doubt about it here. He died in 100 AH/718-19 CE. See: Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 11:141, no. 235; al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil 9:11, no. 49.
(2) Manuscript B reads “ibn ʿUmar,” but the correct reading is “ibn ʿAmr.” See Sunan al-Bayhaqi 9:234.
(3) Al-Bayhaqi records this report in his Sunan (9:234) through several isnads from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr; the author will cite them below.
(4) Saʿid ibn al-Hakam ibn Muhammad ibn Salim, known as Ibn Abi Maryam al-Jumahi al-Misri, Abu Muhammad. The major critics rate him reliable, and the Six Books transmit from him. Born 144 AH/761-62 CE; died 224 AH/838-39 CE. See: Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 4:17-18, no. 23.
(5) Manuscripts C and D read: haddathana (“he narrated to us”).
(6) Nafiʿ ibn Yazid al-Kalaʿi al-Misri, Abu Yazid, said to have been the client of Shurahbil ibn Hasana. Muslim and others narrate from him. Ibn Hajar in Taqrib al-Tahdhib describes him as “trustworthy, devout, seventh generation.” Died 168 AH/784-85 CE. See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib 2:296, no. 28.
(7) Sulaiman ibn Abi Zaynab al-Shami, so in al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil, whose margin adds the nisba “al-Sabayi.” All extant manuscripts, however, read “Salman,” which is probably a scribal error. See: al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil 4:118, no. 512.
(8) ʿAmr ibn al-Harith ibn Yaʿqub ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Ansari, the client of Qays, al-Misri, Abu Umayya. The leading critics deem him reliable, and the Six Books transmit his hadiths. Born 90 AH/708-09 CE; died 147 AH/764-65 CE. He was the foremost scholar, hadith authority, and mufti of Egypt in his day. See: Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 8:14-16, no. 22.
