Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

This is how I found it recorded—though it may well be Ibn Dīnār—who said: ʿUmar declared, “Beware of the jargon of the non-Arabs, and do not enter upon the idolaters in their churches on the day of their festival.”

Al-Bayhaqī also transmits with an authentic chain, in the chapter on the reprehensibility of entering the churches of dhimmīs and of imitating them on Nawrūz and Mahrajān, from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Thawr ibn Yazīd, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Dīnār. He reported that ʿUmar said: “Do not learn the jargon of the non-Arabs, and do not go in to the polytheists in their churches on the day of their feast, for divine wrath descends upon them.”

And with this same chain, from al-Thawrī, from ʿAwf

(1) Manuscript C reads ra’aytu (“I saw”). (2) Manuscript A reads: “wa-laʿallahu Dinar” (“and perhaps it is Dinar”). (3) ʿAtaʾ ibn Dinar, a client of the Hudhali tribe, kunya Abū al-Zayyāt—some say Abū al-Riyyān—an Egyptian transmitter of the sixth generation. Ibn Ḥajar, in al-Taqrīb, rates him “truthful (ṣadūq), though his narration from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr comes only from his notebook.” His ḥadiths appear in Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and—within al-Adab al-Mufrad—al-Bukhārī. He died in 126 AH/744 CE. See: Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb 2/21, no. 188. (4) See: Kanz al-ʿUmmāl 3/886, no. 9034; also al-Bayhaqī, al-Sunan al-Kubrā 9/234, “Chapter on the Dislike of Entering upon the People of Dhimma,” with slight differences in wording. (5) Manuscript A reads karāhiyya (“dislike”). (6) The words “in their churches” are absent from manuscript C. (7) Thawr ibn Yazīd al-Kalāʿī al-Ḥimṣī, kunya Abū Khālid, of the seventh generation. Ibn Ḥajar describes him as “trustworthy and firm (thiqah, thabt), though he held the qadari view.” Narrated by the Six books except Muslim; died in 153 AH/770 CE. See: Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb 1/120, no. 53. (8) Al-Bayhaqī, al-Sunan al-Kubrā 9/234; also ʿAbd al-Razzāq, al-Muṣannaf 1/411, no. 1609. (9) Manuscript A adds: “and the isnād.” (10) ʿAwf ibn Abī Jamīla al-Aʿrābī; his biography has already been cited—see the Index of Names.
