Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

Sixth Evidence

From the Sunnah: Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:

“We are the last (to appear in this world) yet the foremost on the Day of Resurrection. The Scripture was given to them before us, and it was given to us after them. This is the day that had been prescribed for them, but they disagreed over it, so Allah guided us to it. Hence the rest of mankind follow our lead in it: the Jews tomorrow and the Christians the day after tomorrow.” (Agreed upon.)

In another sound wording: “Although the Scripture was given to them before us, and to us after them, this is the day over which they differed, and Allah guided us to it.”

Abū Hurayrah and Ḥudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with them both) also said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared:
“Allah misled those who came before us away from Friday: for the Jews their day became Saturday, and for the Christians their day became Sunday. Then Allah brought us forth and guided us to Friday, so He set the order of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In the same way they will trail behind us on the Day of Resurrection. We are the last of the people of this world, yet the first to be judged— and, in another narration, ‘among them’— before all creation.” (Related by Muslim.)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has on several occasions called Friday “a festival (ʿīd),” and he forbade singling it out for fasting because it contains the meaning of a festival.

(1) The printed edition adds: “And the fifth point—which, as I have already noted, is an error.” (2) Reported by al-Bukhari in several places. See: Kitab al-Wuduʾ (Book of Ablution), Bab al-bawl fi al-maʾ al-daʾim (Chapter: Urinating in stagnant water), hadith no. 238 in Fath al-Bari, 1/345 (abridged). He also records it with fuller wording under nos. 876, 896, 3486, and elsewhere; Muslim narrates it in Kitab al-Jumuʿa (Book of Friday Prayer), Bab Hidayat hadhihi l-umma li-yawm al-Jumuʿa (Chapter: The guidance of this community to Friday), hadith no. 855, 2/585–586. (3) Muslim’s recension contains the additional phrase: “They differed, and Allah guided us to the truth about which they had differed,” under the number just cited (2/586). This addition comes after the words, “and we were given it after them,” and before, “so this is their day.” (4) The word kana (was) is omitted in the printed edition. (5) Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Jumuʿa, Bab Hidayat hadhihi l-umma li-yawm al-Jumuʿa, hadith no. 856, 2/586.
