Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

He asked, “Was it for an idol, or for one of the pagan festivals of the Days of Ignorance?” She replied, “No.” He continued, “My mother has a vow that obliges her to walk—may I discharge it on her behalf?” (Ibn Bashār sometimes reported the wording as: “Shall I discharge it on her behalf?”) He answered, “Yes.”

He also said: Musaddad narrated to us; al-Ḥārith ibn ʿUbayd, Abū Qudāmah, narrated to us; from ʿUbayd Allāh al-Akhnas; from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather: A woman came to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have vowed to beat the tambourine over your head …”

(1) The word wathan (idol) is absent from Manuscript A. (2) All manuscript copies read “am hadhihi”; Abu Dawud and the printed edition follow the wording adopted here. (3) This is likewise the reading in all manuscripts, whereas Abu Dawud has the two words nadhara and mashy. (4) Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Oaths and Vows, chapter “On fulfilling vows,” ḥadith no. 3315 (3/609); all the transmitters in its chain are reliable. (5) Musaddad b. Musarhad b. Musarbil b. Mustawrad al-Asadi al-Basri, Abu al-Hasan. Ibn Hajar, in Taqrib al-Tahdhib, calls him “a trustworthy ḥafiz; it is said he was the first to compile a Musnad in Basra.” He belongs to the tenth generation; Bukhari and others narrated from him. He died in 228 AH, though some say his name was ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿAbd al-ʿAziz. See Taqrib al-Tahdhib 2:242, no. 1052. (6) Al-Harith b. ʿUbayd al-Ayadi al-Basri, Abu Qudama. Ibn Hajar in Taqrib al-Tahdhib rates him “truthful but prone to error.” He is of the eighth generation; Muslim and others transmitted from him. See Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:142, no. 45. (7) The printed edition reads “Abu Qudama ʿUbayd Allah,” suggesting that the preposition ʿan (“from”) has fallen out by mistake. (8) Manuscript A reads “from his grandfather ʿUbayd Allah,” inserting the word “grandfather.” (9) ʿUbayd Allah b. al-Akhnas al-Nakhai al-Khazzaz, Abu Malik. Ibn Hajar describes him as “truthful.” He belongs to the seventh generation; Bukhari, Muslim and others narrated from him. See Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:530, no. 1423. (10) The phrase “from his father” is missing from Manuscript A.
