Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

Buwānah—its initial bāʾ is vocalized with a ḍamma.

Concerning it the Yemeni poet Waḍḍāḥ says:
O twin palms of Buwānah Valley, how delightful it is—
when the watchmen of the date-groves fall asleep—
to gather your ripe clusters!

The relevance of this citation will be clarified shortly.

Abū Dāwūd states in his Sunan:
Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd ibn Muqsim al-Thaqafī—one of the people of Ṭāʾif—reported to us; Sārah bint Muqsim told me that she heard Maymūnah bint

(1) The printed edition reads: “qala” (with the initial bāʾ pronounced with ḍamma), and then adds: “a place near Mecca.” I suspect this explanatory gloss was inserted by Shaykh Hamid al-Faqi. As for Buwāna (with a ḍamma on the first syllable and a shortened wāw), it is a hill situated beyond Yanbuʿ, close to the Red Sea coast and Yanbuʿ, north of Mecca. See Yaqut, Muʿjam al-Buldan, 1:505. (2) ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Ismail ibn ʿAbd Kallal, from the clan of Khawlan of Himyar, was an accomplished poet famous for his elegiac love verse. He composed poetry for Umm al-Banin bint ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Marwan, wife of the caliph al-Walid ibn ʿAbd al-Malik; the caliph had him killed, roughly in 90 AH. See: Fawat al-Wafayat, 2:272–75, no. 252; al-Zirikli, al-Aʿlam, 2:299. (3) See Yaqut, Muʿjam al-Buldan, 1:506. (4) Al-Khallal al-Hulawani al-Hudhali; his biography has already been cited above. See the Index of Persons. (5) ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid ibn Maqsam—known as Ibn Dabba—was a client of the Banu Thaqif living in Basra, originally from Taʾif. Ibn Hajar classed him as “truthful” (saduq) and placed him in the ninth generation of transmitters; Ahmad ibn al-Madini declared him reliable. See: al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil, 5:200, no. 929; Ibn Hajar, Taqrib al-Tahdhib, 1:461, no. 742; Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, 6:80, no. 157. (6) Sarah bint Maqsam al-Thaqafiyya, the paternal aunt of ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid, from whom he narrates here. Ibn Hajar states in Taqrib al-Tahdhib that she is “unknown” and assigns her to the fourth generation of narrators. See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib, 2:601, no. 1; Khalasat al-Tadhhib, p. 492.
