Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

This ḥadith is weak, and it seems to have been fabricated and attributed to Mālik. Nevertheless, its meaning is not far-fetched; indeed, it is sound in certain respects, as we have already explained.

Whoever reflects on what we have presented in this chapter will discern the objective of the Sharīʿah regarding the conformity that is enjoined and the divergence that is forbidden—just as the proofs for this have already been set forth—and will recognize some of its aspects, its causes, and the wisdom it contains.

(1) In manuscripts J and D the wording reads: “Imam Malik.” The expression murakkab ʿalayh means that the statement is falsely attributed to him; the basic sense of tarkib is fabrication—“rakabahu tarkiban,” that is, to stack parts upon one another until they form a composite. See: al-Qamus al-Muhit, root R-B, vol. 1, p. 78.
