Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

Such a person is not considered an adequate match for one whose father and mother both possess that qualification, even though the two parties may be equal in foreign origin and in having been manumitted.

Abū Yūsuf holds that someone with only one such parent is on a par with one who has two, whereas al-Shāfiʿī and Aḥmad give no weight to the matter at all—Aḥmad states this explicitly.

Al-Salafī also transmits, through the line of al-Ḥasan ibn Rashīq: “Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Hārūn narrated to us; al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Sālim narrated to us; Qurrā ibn ʿĪsā al-Wāsiṭī narrated to us ….”

(1) The printed edition reads: “wa-in kana fi al-ʿajamiyya wa-l-ʿatāqa” (“even if it concerns non-Arabic usage and antiquity”). (2) The printed edition has: “(ka-dhī al-abawān),” a wording that is linguistically incorrect. (3) MSS J and D read: “anna lā ʿibra” (“that no legal weight is given”). (4) See: Ibn Hubayra, al-Ifṣāḥ, 2/121; Abu Dawud, Masāʾil al-Imām Aḥmad, p. 159. (5) Al-Ḥasan ibn Rashīq al-ʿAdl, Abū Muḥammad al-ʿAskari, a well-known Egyptian transmitter with high-level isnāds. Ibn Ḥajar (Lisān al-Mīzān) notes that al-Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Ghanī ibn Saʿīd considered him mildly weak, whereas several other authorities declared him reliable; al-Dāraquṭnī both criticized and, in other places, authenticated him. Born 283 AH/896 CE; died 380 AH/991 CE at the age of 87. (6) Probably Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Hārūn ibn Sulaymān, Abū Bakr al-Baghdādī al-Khazzāz, mentioned by Abū Nuʿaym in Dhikr Akhbār Iṣfahān 1/130. (7) Al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Sālim al-Ṭabarī, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Wāsiṭī, later al-Baghdādī, known as “al-Ḥadhdhāʾ” (the cobbler). Al-Ājurrī transmits from Abū Dāwud that “he died earlier; there was nothing objectionable about him.” Died 258 AH/872 CE. See: Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb 8/183–184, no. 328. (8) Qurra ibn ʿĪsā ibn Ismāʿīl al-ʿAbdī is mentioned by Aslam ibn Sahl al-Razzāz al-Wāsiṭī in Tārīkh Wāsiṭ (p. 192) without further information; his name also appears in numerous isnāds in the same work (pp. 58, 66, 99, etc.).
