Likewise, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad recorded in the Musnad of his father: “Ismāʿīl Abū Maʿmar narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Jubayrah, from Dāwūd ibn Ḥuṣayn, from ʿUbaydullāh ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, from ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, ‘No one hates the Arabs except a hypocrite.’
Zayd ibn Jubayrah is regarded by the scholars as a transmitter of munkar ḥadīths, and he was from Madinah. Moreover, the narrations of Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh from non-Shāmī transmitters are considered erratic.
In the same vein, Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh, the renowned ḥāfiẓ from Kūfah, also related
(1) MSS A and B give the name as “Ibn Muʿammar,” while MS T has “Abu ʿAmr.” The correct reading is “Abu Muʿammar,” as reflected in MSS C and D.
(2) He is Ismaʿil b. Ibrahim b. Muʿammar b. al-Hasan al-Hudhali, Abu Muʿammar al-Qatiʿi al-Harawi. Ibn Saʿd writes in al-Tabaqat: “A man of sunnah, virtue, and goodness; he is thiqah thabt (completely reliable).” Ibn Maʿin and others concurred. Al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Nasaʾi, and others narrate from him. He died in 236 AH/850–51 CE. See: Tahdhib al-tahdhib 1:273–74, no. 511A; Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat al-kubra 7:359.
(3) He is Zayd b. Jubayrah b. Mahmud b. Abi Jubayrah b. al-Dahhak al-Ansari, Abu Jubayrah al-Madani, of the seventh generation. Al-Taqrib judges him matruk (discarded). Yahya b. Maʿin said, “He is nothing.” Al-Jarh wa-al-taʿdil reports: ʿAbd al-Rahman said, “I heard my father say, ‘Zayd b. Jubayrah is weak; his reports are extremely objectionable; he is to be abandoned, and his hadith is not written.’” See: Taqrib al-tahdhib 1:273, no. 166Z; al-Razi, al-Jarh wa-al-taʿdil 3:559, no. 2528.
(4) He is ʿUbayd Allah b. Abi Rafiʿ al-Madani, the son of the Prophet’s freedman. He is thiqah (reliable); all six canonical collections and others transmit from him. He also served as the scribe of ʿAli b. Abi Talib. See: Taqrib al-tahdhib 1:532, no. 1441ʿ.
(5) Musnad Ahmad 1:81. The chain contains Zayd b. Jubayrah, whose severe weakness has just been noted, and the author likewise deemed the hadith munkar (anomalous).
(6) MS B adds: wa li-dhalik (“and for that reason”).
