al-Aswad, from Ḥuṣayn—as al-Tirmidhī also recorded—but Imām Aḥmad did not relate it to him. Instead, his son ʿAbd Allāh inserted it in the Musnad by wajādah, saying: “I found in my father’s notebook: Muḥammad ibn Bishr narrated to us…,” and he quoted it.
As is evident from his method in the Musnad, whenever Aḥmad, may Allah have mercy on him, deemed a ḥadīth fabricated or bordering on fabrication, he would not transmit it. For that reason he struck out the reports of certain transmitters and omitted them from the Musnad, because the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever narrates something from me while thinking it is a lie is one of the two liars.”
(1) The narrator is Abd Allah b. Abd Allah b. al-Aswad al-Harithi al-Kufi (Abu Abd al-Rahman). Ibn Hajar rates him “reliable (saduq),” and Abu Hatim says “his standing is that of veracity.” He belongs to the ninth generation. See: al-Jarh wa-l-taʿdil 5:92–93, no. 424; Taqrib al-tahdhib 1:426, no. 405.
(2) This refers to Abd Allah, the son of Imam Ahmad; his biography has already appeared. See the Index of Names.
(3) Wijdadah (“finding”) is when someone discovers hadiths written in the transmitter’s own hand yet does not himself narrate them. It is classed as munqatiʿ (interrupted) transmission, though it retains a partial link. See al-Suyuti, Tadreeb al-raawi 2:61.
(4) Musnad Ahmad 1:72.
(5) MS A adds the blessing radiya Allah ʿanhu (“may Allah be pleased with him”).
(6) MSS B, C, and D read yadullu (“indicates”).
(7) MS A additionally has: aw qarib (“or something close”), which is meaningless and is probably a scribal duplication.
(8) MS A also reads: wa kadhalik (“and likewise”).
(9) Reported by Muslim in the introduction to his Sahih, “Chapter on the obligation to narrate from trustworthy transmitters, to avoid liars, and the warning against fabricating about the Messenger of Allah,” 1:9, both as a suspended and as a connected narration. Also recorded by al-Tirmidhi in the Book of Knowledge, “Chapter on one who relates a hadith knowing it to be false,” no. 2662, from al-Mughira b. Shuʿba; al-Tirmidhi graded it “hasan sahih” and added, “There are corroborating reports from Ali b. Abi Talib and Samura” (5:36). Ibn Majah includes it as well in his introduction, “Chapter on one who narrates a hadith from the Messenger of Allah believing it to be false,” nos. 38–41.
