Wāthilah ibn al-Asqaʿ related: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Allah selected Kinānah from among the descendants of Ishmael, selected Quraysh from among Kinānah, selected the Banū Hāshim from among Quraysh, and selected me from the Banū Hāshim.’”
This wording was transmitted by al-Walīd and Abū al-Mughīrah on the authority of al-Awzāʿī.
Aḥmad and al-Tirmidhī also narrated it through Muḥammad ibn Muṣʿab, from al-Awzāʿī, with the phrasing: “Allah chose, from the descendants of Abraham, Ishmael; and from the descendants of Ishmael, the Banū Kinānah …” and so on. Al-Tirmidhī commented, “This ḥadīth is ḥasan (sound).”
(1) MS A reads “Wabila,” whereas the correct name is Wathila.
(2) The phrase “and He chose me from the Banu Hashim” is missing in MSS J and D.

(4) Al-Walid ibn Muslim al-Qurashi, Abu al-Abbas al-Dimashqi: Taqrib al-Tahdhib describes him as “reliable, but prone to tadlis and taswiya.” He belongs to the eighth generation; all six canonical compilers transmit from him. He died in 195 AH. See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib 2:336 (no. 89 W).

(6) He is the imam ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAmr ibn Abi ʿAmr al-Shami, better known as al-Awzai, Abu ʿAmr—the hadith master, memoriser and jurist. Born 88 AH, Ibn Saʿd said: “He was trustworthy, reliable, truthful, virtuous and devout, with an abundance of hadith, knowledge and fiqh; an authoritative proof.” He lived and died in Beirut, passing away in 157 AH. (7) Muhammad ibn Musab ibn Sadaqa al-Qurqusai: Ibn Hajar states in Taqrib al-Tahdhib, “truthful but often errs.” He died in 208 AH. See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib 2:208 (no. 709 M).
