ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥārith related, on the authority of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Rabīʿah, who said:
“Al-ʿAbbās once entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we go out and see Quraysh conversing, yet when they notice us they fall silent.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry, and perspiration began to bead between his eyes. He then declared, ‘By Allah, faith will not settle in a person’s heart until he loves you for Allah’s sake and because of my kinship.’
”
Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād transmitted these two reports from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥārith: one extolling the merit of the clan from which the Prophet ﷺ came, the other stressing the obligation to love them. Both were conveyed from him by Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid.
As for the fact that ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥārith narrates the first report at times from al-ʿAbbās and at other times from al-Muṭṭalib ibn Abī Wadaʿah, and the second from ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Rabīʿah—the son of al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and himself one of the Companions—some might suspect a confusion of names on the part of Yazīd. This, however, is not the place to discuss the issue, for the proof established by the ḥadīth stands in any case, especially since corroborating narrations support its meaning.
Similar evidence on this matter is found in what Aḥmad, Muslim, and al-Tirmidhī have recorded through the chain of al-Awzāʿī, from Shaddād ibn Abī ʿAmmār, from
