Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

“He should wear a ring only of silver.”

They said: This statement explicitly renders it unlawful to wear rings of stone, iron, or brass, for the transmitted ḥadīth relates that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—saw a man wearing a brass ring and said, “Why do I detect from you the odor of idols?” He then saw another man wearing an iron ring and said, “Why do I see upon you the adornment of the people of Hellfire?”

There are many similar rulings in the school of Abū Ḥanīfah and his companions. As for the school of Mālik and his followers, it contains even more than this. Mālik himself, as narrated by Ibn al-Qāsim in al-Mudawwanah, said: “One must not enter the state of iḥrām in a non-Arabic language, nor supplicate in it.”

(1) See al-Hidayah, Sharh Bidayat al-Mubtadi, ed. al-Rushdani, 4:82. (2) MS A reads: “to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace.” (3) The word safar (the second lunar month) is missing from MS A. (4) This is based on the hadith of Abdullah b. Buraydah, from his father: a man came to the Messenger of Allah wearing a ring of copper, and the Prophet said, “Why do I smell the scent of idols on you?” So he discarded it. He then returned with an iron ring, and the Prophet said, “Why do I see on you the adornment of the people of Hellfire?” He threw it away and asked, “Messenger of Allah, out of what should I fashion a ring?” He replied, “Make it from silver, but do not let it reach one mithqal.” Reported by Abu Dawud, Sunan, Book of Rings, “Chapter: What is narrated concerning iron rings,” no. 4223 (4:428–29); al-Tirmidhi, Book of Dress, “Chapter: Concerning iron rings,” no. 1785 (4:248), who said, “This hadith is gharib; there is also a report from Abdullah b. Amr”; al-Nasa’i, Book of Adornment, “Chapter: The amount of silver allowed in a ring,” 8:172; authenticated by Ibn Hibban (no. 1467); and by al-Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunnah, who remarked, “Its isnad is gharib” (9:121–22). (5) Same as the preceding note. (6) Abd al-Rahman b. al-Qasim b. Khalid b. Junadah al-‘Utaqi al-Misri, Abu Abd Allah, was an eminent Egyptian jurist and ascetic, one of Imam Malik’s leading disciples and the transmitter of al-Mudawwanah. Ibn Hajar says in Taqrib al-Tahdhib: “Reliable, tenth generation.” He died in 291 AH. See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:495 (no. 1079); al-A‘lam, 3:323.
