Saʿīd relates in his Sunan: Hushaym narrated to us, from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Saʿīd ibn Wahb, from his father, who said:
“ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—came out and saw a group of people with their garments hanging loosely. He exclaimed, ‘What is the matter with them? They look like Jews who have just emerged from their pits.’”
Ibn al-Mubārak and Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth also transmitted it from Khālid with the wording:
“He saw some people letting their garments hang loose during prayer and said, ‘They look like Jews who have just come out of their pits.’”
(1) That is, Ibn Mansur; manuscript B gives the same reading.
(2) Khalid ibn Mihran, Abu al-Manazil, the Basran cobbler. Ibn Hajar writes: “He is reliable (thiqah) but sometimes transmits mursal reports; he belongs to the fifth generation. Hammad ibn Zayd noted that his memory deteriorated after he returned from Syria, and some scholars reproached him for accepting a government post.” All six authors of the canonical books narrated from him. See Ibn Hajar, Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:219, no. 82.
(3) Abd al-Rahman ibn Saʿid ibn Wahb al-Hamdani al-Khiywani. Ibn Hajar says: “Reliable; fourth generation.” Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad transmitted his reports. See Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:482, no. 957.
(4) His father is Saʿid ibn Wahb al-Hamdani al-Khiywani, nicknamed al-Qirad, a trustworthy Kufan who lived in both pre-Islamic and Islamic times (mukhadram). Al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad, Muslim, and al-Nasaʾi narrated from him. He died in 76 AH. See Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:307.
(5) Manuscript Aṭ adds the phrase: “peace be upon him.”
(6) The printed edition reads: min fuhurihim. Its meaning will be explained in the main text; see p. 384.
(7) Hafs ibn Ghiyath ibn Taliq ibn Muʿawiyah al-Nakhʿi, Abu ʿUmar, the Kufan qadi. Ibn Hajar states: “Reliable and a jurist; his memory weakened slightly toward the end; he is of the eighth generation.” He died in 195 AH, nearly eighty years old. See Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:189, no. 465.
(8) The printed edition has: fahrūhum.
(9) See: Musannaf ʿAbd al-Razzaq 1:364 (no. 1423); Sunan al-Bayhaqi 2:243; and Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 2:259.
