Ḥammad ibn Salamah narrated from Abū Sinān, on the authority of ʿUbayd ibn Ādam, Abū Maryam, and Abū Shuʿayb, that ʿUmar was at al-Jābiyah—he then mentioned the conquest of Jerusalem.
Ḥammad ibn Salamah went on to say: Abū Sinān related to me from ʿUbayd ibn Ādam, who said: “I heard ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—say to Kaʿb, ‘Where do you think I should pray?’ Kaʿb replied, ‘If you follow my advice, you will pray behind the Rock, so that the whole of Jerusalem will lie before you.’ ʿUmar answered, ‘That would be imitating the Jews; no, I shall pray where the Messenger of Allah—Allah bless him and grant him peace—prayed.’ He then stepped forward toward the qiblah and performed the prayer. After finishing, he spread out his cloak, gathered the rubbish into it, and the people helped him clean the place.”
(1) ʿIsa ibn Sinan al-Hanafi, Abu Sinan, al-Qasmali al-Filastini, later resident in Basra. Ibn Hajar places him in the sixth generation and remarks that his hadith is “soft,” i.e., somewhat weak. Ahmad and al-Nasai judged him unreliable, whereas Ibn Hibban considered him acceptable. See: Taqrib al-tahdhib 2:98, no. 880; Khulasat al-tadhhib, p. 302.
(2) ʿUbayd ibn Adam is mentioned by al-Razi in Jarh wa taʿdil: “He heard ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab and narrated from Abu Hurayra,” without passing judgment. Ibn Hajar notes in Taʿjil al-manfaʿa that Ibn Hibban listed him among the trustworthy. See: Jarh wa taʿdil 5:401, no. 1857; Taʿjil al-manfaʿa, p. 276, no. 700.
(3) The narrator is probably Iyas ibn Subayh al-Hanafi, Abu Maryam, the first qadi of Basra, appointed by Abu Musa al-Ashʿari. (The sources I consulted do not allow a definitive identification of this Abu Maryam.) See: Tahdhib al-tahdhib 12:232.
(4) Manuscript A reads: “and Abu Maryam ibn Shuʿayb,” which is a scribal error.
(5) Ibn Hajar states in Taʿjil al-manfaʿa: “Abu Shuʿayb, from whom Abu Sinan narrates on the authority of ʿUmar, is unknown,” adding comments that class him as majhul (unidentified). See: Taʿjil al-manfaʿa 1:495, no. 1309.
(6) Musnad Ahmad 1:38, Musnad of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab. Ibn Kathir cites the chain in al-Bidaya wa-l-nihaya 7:58 and remarks: “This isnad is sound; it was endorsed by the hadith master Diyaʾ al-Din al-Maqdisi in his Mustakhraj.” See also Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Manar al-munif, pp. 88–89 with the editor’s notes.
