Moreover, it is narrated from ʿAmr ibn Maymūn al-Awdi (1) that he said: ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—stated, “In the Days of Ignorance people would not depart from Jamʿ (Muzdalifah) until the sun had risen. They would cry, ‘Let Thabīr shine so that we may set out!’ The Prophet ﷺ, however, opposed them and moved on before sunrise.” (2)
It is also reported in this ḥadīth—so far as I remember—that he said, “Our way differs from the way of the idolaters.” (3) In the same manner, they used to leave ʿArafāt before sunset, but the Prophet ﷺ opposed them by departing only after the sun had set. Hence remaining at ʿArafāt until after sunset has been deemed obligatory by the vast majority of scholars, indeed a pillar
(1) The printed edition mistakenly reads “al-Azdi”; the correct reading, retained here, is “al-Awdi.” This refers to ʿAmr ibn Maymun al-Awdi, Abu ʿAbd Allah—also called Abu Yahya—a reliable, devout, and well-known narrator cited by all six canonical compilers; he died in 74 AH. See: Ibn Hajar, Taqrib al-Tahdhib 2/80, no. 689 (ʿAyn).
(2) Reported by al-Bukhari, Book of Hajj, chapter “When to depart from Jamʿ,” Hadith 1684 (Fath al-Bari 3/531) with slight variations in wording; by al-Tirmidhi, Book of Hajj, chapter “Permissibility of leaving (ifada) before sunrise,” Hadith 896 (3/242); and by Ahmad, Musnad 1/39, 42, 50, 54 (within the Musnad of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab), whose wording closely matches the present text.
(3) Al-Bayhaqi narrates—on the authority of al-Miswar ibn Makhrama—in al-Sunan al-Kubra (5/125, chapter “Departing from Muzdalifah”) that the Prophet said the idolaters leave ʿArafah at sunset “until the sun is above the mountain tops,” adding, “Our practice differs from theirs.” He then notes that they leave al-Mashʿar al-Haram at sunrise and repeats, “Our practice differs from theirs.” Al-Bayhaqi also transmits the report in mursal form; only the relevant portions are cited here.
(4) MS (B) reads: “and for that reason.”
(5) MSS (Ab, Ṭ) read: “before sunset.”
