Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—forbade ten things:

  1. filing the teeth;
  2. tattooing;
  3. plucking the hair;
  4. a man lying with another man under a single cover with no garment between them;
  5. a woman lying with another woman under a single cover with no garment between them;
  6. a man attaching silk to the lower edge of his clothes in the manner of the non-Arabs;
  7. or draping silk over his shoulders in the manner of the non-Arabs;
  8. snatching spoils before their lawful distribution;
  9. using leopard skins as saddle cloths; and
  10. wearing a ring except by one who holds authority.

In another wording Abū Rayḥāna said, “It has reached me that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—….” This ḥadīth is soundly preserved through the narration of ʿIyāsh ibn ʿAbbās, who transmitted it.

(1) Wushr: a woman filing her teeth so that they become pointed and slender. See Mukhtar al-Sihah, root w-sh-r, p. 723. (2) Washm (tattooing): pricking the skin with a needle or the like and then applying a substance that stains the skin. See Mukhtar al-Sihah, root w-sh-m, p. 723. (3) The “plucking” (natf) meant here includes: a woman removing facial hair; a man plucking his beard or eyebrows; pulling out white hairs; hair-pulling in mourning; and the like. See Awn al-Maʿbud 11/97. (4) Mukamaʿah: two men, or two women, lying together and engaging in intercourse without any covering between them. See Mukhtar al-Sihah, root k-m-ʿ, p. 579. (5) Manuscript B reads al-nahy (prohibition), which is incorrect. The correct word is nahba, from nahb, meaning a raid and plunder, and by extension the goods carried off. See Lisan al-Arab 1/773–74, s.v. n-h-b. (6) That is, using leopard skins as saddle cloths; some say this was part of foreign dress. See Awn al-Maʿbud 11/98. (7) Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Dress, chapter “What Is Disliked (namely silk),” no. 4049, 4/325–26; Sunan al-Nasai, Book of Adornment, chapter on plucking, 8/143–44; Musnad Ahmad 4/134. Suyuti cites it in al-Jamiʿ al-Saghir 2/701, no. 9494, grading it hasan. I did not find it in Sunan Ibn Majah. (8) Reported by al-Nasai with the wording “it has reached us,” Book of Adornment, chapter on the prohibition of wushr, 8/149.
